Herman Miller outdoor collection at Living Edge

Herman Miller has created an outdoor furniture collection using designs by Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson.

The Eames Aluminium Group Outdoor collection includes a reworking of the Eames Aluminium Group chair and Eames and Nelson tables with outdoor surfaces.

Herman Miller released the original Eames Aluminium Group chair by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958. Designed using aluminium, it consisted of a nylon and Saran seat slung between two aluminium “L” beams. These were held in tension by two cross-braces. However, the seat fabric didn’t fare well in the elements or stand up to heavy use and the Aluminium Group soon moved exclusively indoors. The range evolved to include the variations that have since become iconic in both home and office interiors.

Today, the Aluminium Group chairs have been completely re-engineered for outdoor use with durable materials and finish options. Herman Miller has developed a new fabric, Outdoor Weave, which has the look and feel of the original Saran and the porosity of an outdoor mesh. Outdoor Weave is PVC-free, and is available in five colours – cool white, lead, java, jute, and graphite – which complement the new white and graphite satin powder-coated outdoor finishes. The Eames Aluminium Outdoor Group collection now includes lounge, ottoman and guest/dining versions, suitable for outdoor and indoor spaces.

The tables in the collection are essentially Eames and Nelson-designed tables with stone tops. They are available in four varieties: Georgia White Marble, Wisconsin Black Marble, Georgia Grey Marble and Quebec Graphite Granite. The Eames Universal, Contract and LTR bases, as well as the Nelson Pedestal table, are available in white and satin graphite powdercoat in a range of heights and diameters, with stone tops.

The collection is available from Herman Miller in Australia.
