There is a golden trifecta when it comes to producing outstanding architecture: you need a trusting client, a talented architect and a committed builder. I’m often reminded of the value of this trifecta when visiting houses across Australia and meeting the architects, clients and (sometimes) builders behind them, as it gives me insight into the strength of the bond that can be formed during the process of designing and constructing a home.
For this issue’s cover project, Silver Street House by EHDO, the owner “lovingly considered and handmade” the building himself over a long period of time and the relationship between the architect and the owner-builder became more like an old friendship. Although this is a unique collaboration, there is something to be said for enjoying the process of designing your own home and embracing the relationships that can grow along the way.
