Laminex collaborates with design powerhouse YSG Studio

Laminex is constantly innovating and creating space to collaborate with Australia’s best design talent. Following on from last year’s successful collaboration with Kennedy Nolan, Laminex engaged Yasmine Saleh Ghoniem of YSG Studio to bring her design prowess and creativity to the Laminex brand.

Within her designs for Laminex, Yasmine strived to create blissful, inviting spaces, claiming, “I wanted to capture the essence of ‘afternoon delight,’ that warm, cozy time of day when the sun filters into the home and there’s nowhere else that you’d rather be because the world seems to stop in that golden moment.”

YSG Studio is renowned for their unexpected use of colour. With an aubergine ceiling, sage green walls and a cerulean blue bar featured in their previous projects, the all-female design team isn’t afraid to eschew the ordinary to make way for the exceptional. Designing a kitchen affectionately known as “The Fantales Kitchen” and a living space to be unveiled early next year, YSG Studio used Laminex’s stunning new Colour Collection inspired by the rich hues of nature to create a vibrant and warm space. Featuring shades of terracotta, (Moroccan Clay), deep purples (Kalamata), subtly washed pinks (Porcelain Blush), full-bodied orange (Burnt Ochre) and aged timber (Danish Walnut), YSG Studio has injected their signature flair into the designs, whilst maintaining a versatile and neutral base tone.

Sacha Leagh-Murray, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Laminex, said of the collaboration, “Our brief was to work with colour and texture in a fresh and innovative way. Yasmine is known for her adventurous approach to bold colour and texture, and so with her unique design approach and our incredible range of laminates, we knew it would make for a perfect match. The gorgeous tones of our new Colour Collection, paired with Yasmine’s ability to see the extraordinary in every space, has brought to life an incredibly playful and striking space.”

Within her design process, Yasmine focused on three key components: colour-fields, framing devices and texture. On conceptualizing the colour palette for the kitchen, Yasmine says, “I tried to imagine what it’d feel like being dipped into a pot of sweet, warm caramel. There’s something so luscious about the deeper block colours, including Moroccan Clay and Burnt Ochre, that distinguish the L-shaped kitchen bench joinery, defining the primary work focus. Elevated above a platform of mosaic tiles, it has a levitational quality befitting the desired dreamy state I wanted to achieve. The floating pantry cupboard features a rich Moroccan Clay internal Laminex shade plus blue/grey Fresh Spring shelves for a stimulating surprise of colour when opened.”

Yasmine says, “Allowing the tactile appeal of Laminex Woodgrain laminates to be fully appreciated, we mis-matched its grain for a tapestry-like appeal.”

The benefit of this materiality, Yasmine says, is that “working with Laminex reduced the need to explore other materials such as solid timber and natural stone, so it was a huge time (and budget) saver. It felt like I had all my resources at my fingertips.”

YSG Studio’s open-plan designs are as functional as they are visually striking, featuring multi-purpose spaces and an abundance of storage. The kitchen and living zones are connected through an entry passage in the kitchen wall that allows for the flow of natural light and air. Perfectly curated to suit the modern way of life, the spacious kitchen is as much for entertaining as it is for cooking.

Offering ease of application, durability, and expert quality, Laminex laminates are the ideal choice for contemporary living. A marvel of dynamic design, the Laminex x YSG Studio collaboration is a testament to both the design-driven, innovative qualities of Laminex product, and the inimitable style of YSG Studio.
