Lyons appointed to design Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment

The Victorian Health Building Authority has appointed Lyons as the principal architect for stages two and three of the $541.6 million Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment.

The firm will design the central energy plant building along with the main hospital tower, which will include the new emergency department, women’s and children’s hub, theatre suite and extra inpatient and short stay beds.

The hospital development will also include a new pharmacy, education and training facilities, and an expanded critical care floor bringing together operating theatres, procedure rooms, an expanded intensive care unit, endoscopy suites and consulting rooms. Once complete, the redeveloped hospital will have capacity for an additional 4,000 surgeries every year.

“The redevelopment will support Ballarat Base Hospital to provide modern services and facilities to care for a growing local community for generations to come,” said Victorian Health Building Authority CEO Robert Fiske.

In addition to Lyons’ appointment, LCI has been announced as principal engineer.

“We are looking forward to working with Lyons, LCI and Ballarat Health Services on this significant piece of regional infrastructure, and engaging with the local community to understand their priorities and aspirations for what their new hospital will look like,” Fiske said.

Final designs are expected to be released in early 2022 and construction of the central energy plant, pharmacy, pathology and education and training facilities is scheduled to begin in August of that year.

Construction of the hospital tower will get underway in 2024 and is scheduled for completion in 2027.
