The Australian Institute of Architects has appointed David Karotkin as the 75th national president at an annual general meeting held in Melbourne on 28 May 2014.
David Karotkin, who takes over the presidency from Paul Berkemeier, has held the role of WA Chapter president for the past three years and was a strong advocate for the profession in that state. He sets the engagement of architects as a key part of his agenda for his presidency at the national level: “While I’ll continue to work with my fellow councillors in implementing strategic initiatives currently in development, I would also like to promote some issues that I am particularly interested in, including mandatory use of architects for the design of certain types of buildings and improved member engagement with the Institute,” said Karotkin.
David has practised around the world from Australia to Asia, Israel and UK across a broad range of projects including education, law and order, community development and healthcare. As managing director of Perth-based Sandover Pinder, he recently spearheaded the firm’s expansion into Indonesia with groundbreaking projects in the healthcare industry that has set new international standards.
In taking over the presidency from Paul Berkemeier, Karotkin commended Berkemeier on his leadership and particularly for his role in the development of Australia’s bid for International Union of Architects (UIA) 2020 Congress.
The Institute has also appointed Jon Clements, former Victorian Chapter president as president elect.
