Rugged bush house wins Newcastle Architecture Medal

An architect’s holiday home, painstakingly designed over a seven year process, has been awarded the top accolade at the 2021 Newcastle Architecture Awards.

Lahznimmo Architects won the Newcastle Architecture Medal for House at Pretty Beach, a project that sensitively navigates the challenging steep bush site and respects its flora and fauna.

The jury described the project as “a remarkable gem of a building.”

“This projects reminds us that good architecture embraces its site and works with it,” the jury said. “The beauty and ruggedness are not mutually exclusive and its simplicity is something worth striving for.”

Across the Newcastle region, eight awards and eight commendations were handed out on Friday 19 March in announcement.

“The calibre of projects entered in this year’s awards program demonstrates the high standard of architecture being produced in the Newcastle region,” said jury chair Philip Pollard. “Without exception, each project demonstrated remarkable levels of collaboration between architects and their clients, in both the private and public sector realms, to deliver outstanding examples of innovation, creativity and adaptation.”
