Nine Australian designers inducted into DIA Hall of Fame

Nine Australian designers from four states have been inducted to the Design Institute of Australia’s (DIA) Hall of Fame.

The inductees come from various disciplines including furniture design, fashion design, jewellery design, design writing, retailing, education and manufacturing.

The 2016 DIA Hall of Fame inductees are:

Langdon Badger (SA) – Industrial, furniture and interior designer who for more than five decades provided advice and sold contemporary furniture and textiles from his Adelaide retail store.

David Clark (NSW) – Editor in chief of Vogue Living Australia for 10 years and key promoter, curator, commentator and advocate for the Australian design industry.

Aurelio (Ray) Costarella (WA) – World-renown Perth-based fashion designer. A 30-year retrospective of his work was held in 2013 at the WA Museum.

Joanne Cys LFDIA (SA) – One of Australia’s greatest advocates for design and the design industry, associate professor in interior architecture at University of South Australia, past national president of the Design Institute of Australia.

Stuart Devlin (VIC) – Designer of Australian Decimal Currency coins released in 1966 as well as coins for more than 30 other countries, goldsmith and jeweller to Queen Elizabeth II.

David Foulkes-Taylor (WA) - Designer, art connoisseur and entrepreneur. His Triangle Gallery opened in 1960 and introduced Perth to contemporary art and design.

Ian Howard (VIC) – Founder and CEO or Aristoc Industries, which manufactured contemporary furniture (designed by Grant Featherstone and many international designers under license).

Khai Liew FDIA (SA) – Designer and maker of collectable furniture held in galleries and collections around the world, champion and promoter of Australian colonial furniture.

Edmond (Ted) Worsley FDIA (VIC) – A long and distinguished career in design and design education and founder of Society of Designers for Industry (later to evolve into the Design Institute of Australia).

The 2016 DIA Hall of Fame Committee included James Harper (chair, LFDIA) Joanne Cys (LFDIA), Oliver Kratzer (LFDIA), Geoff Fitzpatrick (LFDIA / HoF), Michael Bogle (HoF), Paul van Barneveld, Meryl Hare (FDIA / HoF).

The inductees were recognized at a presentation event in Adelaide on 24 September.
