Raising the bar

Student-and-architect teams in Perth and Sydney had just one day to design and build working bars from recycled materials, then open them to the public.

The One:One project started in Sydney in 2011 and spread to Perth in 2012. It’s a collaborative workshop where teams of architects and students take on the challenge of turning a pile of junk into a fully functioning bar that operates for one day only, this year it was Friday 10 August.

Tim Hastwell of JDH Architects started the project in 2011, and it gathered so much interest that this year, it spread to Perth. On August 10, seventeen teams across the two cities went flat chat turning trash – well, recycled building materials – into some outstanding little bars which they opened to the public that night.

In Sydney the bars were built at the UTS Warehouse in Chippendale with over sixty students and architects collaborating in ten design/build teams, and over 400 people turning up to see the results.

The Perth event at City Farm saw forty-five architects and students building their bars and over 150 people turning up for a drink.

Hastwell started One:One in collaboration with SONA and DARCH (the NSW of arm of EmAGN) as a bridge between the professional and student bodies, bringing students and architects together in a fast and furious design and build project.
