The 2015 Sunshine Coast Awards were announced on Friday 17 April at Maroochy Surf Club in Maroochydore. From 12 projects submitted, 7 have been recognised by the Australian Institute of Architects Queensland Chapter. Among them two received awards. The night’s top honour, the Gabriel Poole Award for Building of the Year went to House in Noosa by MORQ. The award for Regional Building of the Year went to Lake Weyba Duplex by Robinson Architects.
All projects recognised will progress to the state Queensland Architecture Awards, to be announced in Brisbane on 26 June 2015.
The winners are:
Gabriel Poole Award for Building of the Year
House in Noosa (Noosa Heads) – MORQ
Jury citation: A sublime response to site and place, this cliff side house overlooking Laguna bay weaves its way narrowly between protected mature vegetation. Materiality, detail and execution poetically fuse the house to site becoming at one with it. Internally the spatial experience is one of serenity, calm and delightful restraint.
Region Project of the Year
Lake Weyba Duplex (Noosaville) – Robinson Architects
Jury citation: Lake Weyba Duplex presents a successful solution to what can be a challenging building type. The design utilises its corner site to provide two residences that enjoy a feeling of separation and privacy. The spaces within the building are characterized by natural light, ventilation and a strong connection to the outside. Externally a refined palette of materials presents an attractive and engaging building to the street.
