The Victorian state government has announced the restoration of Melbourne’s Flinders Street Station will begin in the coming weeks, after awarding the construction contract to Built.
A spokesperson for Major Projects Victoria told ArchitectureAU a design team has not been appointed for the restoration of the building, however, heritage architects Lovell Chen will be advising on the project.
The refurbishment includes repainting, restoring the facade, fixing the leaky roof, extending the concourse along Swanston Street as well as new entrances on Elizabeth Street and the Degraves subway.
The main entrance will also be upgraded to ease commuter traffic in and out of the station.
Victoria’s premier Daniel Andrews announced the $100 million restoration works in February 2015, after axing the previous government’s plans to redevelop the station following an international design competition, which he described as “an indulgent colouring-in competition.”
“Our practical project will fix Flinders Street Station […] making the station more functional for the 200,000 passengers that use it every day,” Premier Andrews said.
The restoration works are expected to be completed in 2018.
