Richard Rogers joins Pritzker jury

London-based architect Richard Rogers is appointed to the jury of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Tom Pritzker, president of the Hyatt Foundation made the announcement in Chicago on 15 January, 2015.

Rogers is the 2007 Pritzker Laureate and the ninth member to join the jury which includes 2002 Laureate Glenn Murcutt, Lord Peter Palumbo (chair), Alejandro Aravena, Stephen Breyer, Yung Ho Chang, Kristin Feireiss and Indian businessman Ratan N. Tata.

“Richard Rogers understands architecture in its larger context and is deeply committed to its crucial role in creating liveable cities,” said Tom Pritzker. “Richard’s humanist perspective will make a substantial contribution to the jury.”

Rogers founded his practice Rogers Stirk Harbour Partners (formerly Richard Rogers Partnership) in London, 1977, and has been the mastermind of an extensive number of projects around the world which “represent defining moments in the history of contemporary architecture,” as described in Rogers’ Pritzker Prize jury citation. His most notable projects include the Centre Pompidou in Paris (with Renzo Piano, 1977), the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg (1989) and the Millennium Dome in London (2000).

As well as a Pritzker laureate, Rogers’ accolades inlcude the RIBA Gold Medal in 1985, Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Medal in 1999, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2006 Venice Biennale and he was knighted in 1996.

He’s work in urban design and master planning of major cities including London, Lisbon, Berlin, New York and Shanghai has lead him to serve in advisory roles to key government bodies. In 1998, Rogers was appointed chair of the UK Government’s Urban Taskforce on the state of cities by the then Deputy Prime Minister. He was Chief Advisor on architecture and urbanism to the Mayor of London as well as advisor to the Mayor of Barcelona’s Urban Strategies Council.

Outside of architecture, Rogers is Chairman of Tate Gallery, Deputy Chairman of Arts Council of Great Britain and Honorary Trustee of MoMA in New York.

The 2015 Pritzker Prize laureate is expected to be announced in March.
