Australian architecture firm BVN has received an honourable mention in a competition to design a masterplan for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
BVN’s vision for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Park included an urban plan for 2046 and had a strong focus on the Olympic legacy. At the centre of the Olympic plan, which also includes provisions for the Paralympics, is a public concourse designed to provide a dynamic element through the Olympic Park and to inform the transformation of the larger Barra di Tijuca site according to the 2046 urban plan. The proposal for the 2046 urban settlement includes a zero-carbon footprint and the creation of a sense of community and social participation through neighbourhood gardens and increased pedestrianization. Designed with sustainable transport modes such as light rail and bicycles in mind, the intention was to create a development that would last beyond the twenty-first century.
BVN has worked on every Olympic event since Sydney 2000, competing against top American and European architects.
UK-based AECOM, an organization that includes engineers, planners, designers and project managers, were the winners of the masterplan competition.
