2011 AILA South Australian Awards announced

A large number of entries were received for this year’s South Australian Landscape Architecture Awards, which were presented at an industry cocktail party at the Science Exchange on Saturday 29 October.

The SA Medal for Landscape Architecture went to Adelaide firm Fifth Creek Studio for its book Living Architecture – Green Roofs and Walls by Graeme Hopkins and Christine Goodwin. The book explores green roof and living wall projects in Australia and New Zealand. Using vegetation on roofs and walls as a method of creating more natural environments in urban space is a growing trend in Australia and is already widely accepted in Europe and North America.

Green infrastructure was also a winning theme for local firm Oxigen, which took out an Excellence Award in Research for its visionary Green Infrastructure Working Paper. The first of its kind for an Australian City, the working paper has the potential to influence at the national level, links the benefits of green infrastructure to the SA Government’s thirty year plan which cites improved liveability, drive sustainability and increased resilience to climate change.

Landscape architecture firm Taylor Cullity Lethlean was similarly honoured with an Excellence Award in Urban Design for its work as principal consultant on the Victoria Square/Tarndanyangga regeneration project. Aimed at injecting vitality into the symbolic heart of the city, the plan features a fully serviced event space capable of accommodating crowds of up to 8,000 people during events such as concerts, markets, street performances, cultural celebrations, exhibitions, sporting events and food and wine festivals.
