The Marrickville Council is considering three concept designs for a new library for Marrickville, Sydney. The new library will be built on the old Marrickville Hospital site and the designs are now available for comment on the Marrickville Council website.
The designs are colour-coded for easy reference – Blue by BVN, Green by Daryl Jackson Robin Dyke and Lacoste + Stevenson, and Yellow by FJMT.
BVN’s Blue concept creates a landmark building out of the old hospital building, while interacting with the street and passers-by. The concept includes a sunken garden that could be used for community events such as outdoor cinema and markets. The Old Hospital Lane becomes a pedestrian walkway and a green space positioned on the corner of the site.
Daryl Jackson Robin Dyke and Lacoste + Stevenson’s Green concept positions the main library building on the corner of Marrickville and Livingstone roads underneath a green roof. A forecourt addresses Marrickville Road and the old hospital building is left relatively untouched.
FJMT’s Yellow concept also occupies the corner of Marrickville and Livingstone roads. A wide community verandah allows the building to blend into an open green space on Marrickville Road. The heritage hospital buildings are repurposed for council use.
The winning architectural firm will be announced in March 2012 and detailed designs will be placed on public display for feedback in August 2012. The new library is scheduled to open in January 2015.
