Construction to start on new Bond University architecture building

The official sod turning for the new $16.2 million dollar Soheil Abedian School of Architecture building at Bond University is to take place this Friday, 21 October.

Its architect, Sir Peter Cook, founder of influential 1960s firm Archigram and latterly of CRAB Studios, will be present at the ceremony, along with Soheil Abedian and Bond University chancellor Dr Helen Nugent. The sod turning will form part of the Bond University Great Expectations in Architecture Symposium occurring on the same day.

The new building, which will form part of the growing Institute of Sustainable Development and Architecture, is to feature structural “scoops” within an internal street, which runs the full height and length of the building. The “scoops” will provide unique workspaces for students to exhibit and critique their work in an open classroom format, and will also provide a space for community events. In addition, the building will feature dedicated environmental science laboratories.

Peter Cook has designed the building to integrate with the surrounding environment and to complement the adjacent Mirvac School of Sustainable Development building. Construction is due to start before the end of October, with completion and use expected in January 2013.
