Design competition launched for the Sydney stadium that survived demolition

Registrations have opened for a design competition for the public precinct surrounding Sydney Olympic Park (ANZ Stadium).

The NSW government is calling for entries from “experienced urban designers, landscape architects and architects” for the two-stage competition. City Lab is the government’s competition advisor.

The winners of the competition will receive a prize of $100,000, with a further $100,000 divided among the remaining shortlisted competitors.

The stadium was originally included in the NSW Government’s hugely contentious plans to knock down and rebuild two of Sydney’s major sporting venues, with Allianz Stadium at Moore Park also flagged for demolition. The government removed the Olympic Stadium from the plan in March 2018, but proceeded with the demolition of the Moore Park stadium.

The government instead said it would refurbish the stadium – designed by Populous and Bligh Lobb Sports Architecture and completed in 1999 – at a cost of $810 million.

Entries will be evaluated on how they engage with the following themes: “To celebrate the Olympic spirit,” “To create a place for people” and “To establish a green heart.”

The competition jury is chaired by acting Government Architect NSW Ben Hewett and will include Mark Tyrrell (adjunct professor, UTS and director, Tyrrell Studio), Oi Choong (consultant landscape architect), Simon Knott (director, BKK Architects) and SueAnne Ware (head of architecture and built environment, The University of Newcastle).

Registrations close on 8 October, with the winner expected to be announced in February 2020. For more information, go here.
