Sydney’s City Tattersalls Club redevelopment approved

A 50-storey tower will be built above Sydney’s 125-year-old City Tattersalls Club building on Pitt Street, after council approved the development application.

BVN won a design competition for the design of the tower, while FJMT was appointed to oversee all heritage design aspects of the redevelopment.

The redevelopment of the club will include upgrades to the heritage-listed building, including the provision of new retail, restaurants, bars, gym and co-working areas. In the tower above will be a 101-room hotel and 241 “high-end” apartments. Suede Interior Design is designing the hotel interiors.

Lina Sjögren, head of FJMT’s interiors team, said the overarching design “weaves together old and new, heritage and future vision.”

“Our approach will preserve the beautiful heritage interiors whilst bringing a new and exciting layer of contemporary design that organically integrates and complements the building’s existing features,” she said.

BVN principal architect Phillip Rossington explained how the design manages the interface between tower and heritage building.

“In the design we’re connecting the new tower to the existing ground floor heritage components through a podium that includes a spectacular open outdoor terrace,” he said. “This will soften the view of the exterior from the street and create a sense of harmony. The podium combines function and form, operating as the hotel’s amenity levels while simultaneously creating a holistic view of the overall building.”

Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2022.
