In this latest instalment of Talking Houses, architect Matthew Eagle takes a cruise around the streets of Miami on the Gold Coast, and inside Cantala Avenue House, the 2020 Australian House of the Year.
The house embodies Eagle’s innate understanding of the Gold Coast’s landscape and culture. Celebrating a rich architectural legacy of modest buildings that support life lived outdoors, this unassuming home preserves the collective memory of its place.
The Talking Houses: The decade’s best video series reflects the vibrant milieu of Australian residential design and will reveal the unique character of each practice. Past winners of the Australian House of the Year award were invited to the stories, ideas and experience of living in each of their award-winning homes.
The 2020 Houses Awards is presented by Architecture Media and supported by Cult, Allegion, Artedomus, Blum, Bosch, Brickworks, the Heritage Council of Victoria, Sussex, and Taubmans.
Winners were announed in an online celebration on 31 July. See all the winners on the Houses Awards website.
