Timber tower proposed for Brisbane

Cottee Parker has designed an 11-storey timber office tower with three residential dwellings perched on top of it for Newstead in Brisbane.

The cross-laminated timber tower at 12 Kyabra Street would provide office space for small businesses, with the strata-titled office tenancies ranging from 50 to 250 square metres.

Clearly defined by their warehouse-inspired gabled roofs, the houses atop the tower would include two three-bedroom units and a four-bedroom unit. Hospitality tenancies at ground level round the development off.

The three-level podium would be of traditional construction, forming a platform for the timber structured building to rest upon it. A timber screening element attached to the front of the podium would connect conceptually to the tower above.

“The large screen aligns with the core structure of the tower through its timber materiality, with the hint of planting growth that allows filtered views between the street and the commercial tenancies within,” states Cottee Parker in planning documents.

“The screening elements, wall finishes and planting will be utilised to break the scale down to the neighbouring building, with a gradient fretting applied to the southern facade glazing to ensure privacy for the existing spaces.”

A development application for the project has been submitted to Brisbane council.
