Sydney Design 2014

Sydney Design returns for its eighteenth year 18–24 August, 2014. Themed ‘Design futures’, the 2014 festival explores the myriad ways in which technology is transforming the way we design, produce and consume. More than fifty cultural institutions and creative practices are taking part in the nine-day festival produced by Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences and presented by the Powerhouse Museum.

With a program exhibitions, talks, tours and workshops, the festival looks both forward at the possibilities of technological innovations as well as into our history at how technology has transformed everyday life. “The program captures design zeitgeist from 3D printing to our favourite devices,” said Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences Director, Rose Hiscock.

The centrepiece of will be the Interface: People, Machines and Design exhition at the Powerhouse Museum, from 15 August 2014 to 11 October 2015. Featuring objects from the likes of Braun, Apple and Olivetti, the exhibition look at the nexus between design and technology, and how the application of design thinking transforms clunky machines into objects of desire.

In addition, the festival program also includes FabLab - digital fabrication and design space using Makerbot 3D printers, 3D scanners and laser cutters; 66 Meet Ups, a workshop for creative entrepreneurs to discuss better ways of doing business; and an augmented reality mobile treasure hunt and Oscar the drawing machine.
