Our Houses Hobart

Our Houses is coming to Hobart this October, with two spectacular houses to be presented by the architects and clients.

Our Houses is a nationwide program that offers architecture enthusiasts the chance to go behind the scenes to see how architects collaborate with their clients. The Hobart event, happening on 23 October at the Brickworks Design Studio, will feature Mount Stuart Greenhouse and Balmain Rock.

Sophie Bence and Shamus Mulcahy of Bence Mulcahy will present Mount Stuart Greenhouse alongside their client Bron Fitzgerald. The design brief from Bron and partner Guy Bylsma, who recently moved into this heritage house on the fringe of Hobart, was for their home to be “engulfed by the garden.” Bence Mulcahy’s response was to design a two-storey greenhouse style glass extension, with a private suite contained in a floating box.

Andrew Benn of Benn + Penna will present Balmain Rock alongside his client Vanessa Rock. Joint winner of the 2019 Houses Award: House in a Heritage Context, Balmain Rock is a compact 1860s sandstone cottage in Sydney’s inner-west that presents a balance of new and old with additions that respect the original quality of the home. A new concrete pavilion expands the home, offering a material juxtaposition to highlight the warmth of the sandstone.
