CAPITheticAL: A design ideas competition for a hypothetical Australian capital city

With the approach of Canberra’s centenary celebrations, CAPITheticAL invites designers to review the processes, debates and influences leading up to the design competition of 2011–12, to re-imagine the task that was faced at the time, and to suggest how these challenges would be met today.

Described as big ideas, big future, the competition invites responses to a number of questions including:

  • Would you build a new capital today or could the Australian Federation be expressed in a different way?
  • Would it be a city in the conventional sense or not? If not, what form might it take?
  • What ideas would drive its design and development?
  • How would 21st century social, political and environmental factors influence the nature of the city?
  • Of what should our national capital consist?

Individuals and collaborative design teams of professionals, students and recent graduates in architecture, planning, engineering, design and other design professionals with a passion for cities and urban culture are encouraged to participate.

Stage 1 submissions are due by 31 January 2012, stage 2 is due on 30 November 2012 and the winners will be announced in March 2013.

For more information or to register interest go to the CAPITheticAL website.
