John Wardle Architects presents an exhibition called Coincidences, a collection of 26 photographs that are the result of the firm asking photographers to shoot pairings of buildings and find an aspect of commonality between the structures.

The exhibition continues the theme of the firm’s recently launched book, This Building Likes Me. The book sees buildings grouped into pairs and the relationships between the two explored. Common themes between the buildings are revealed through reflection from John Wardle Architects.

The coincidental similarities between buildings may not be realized until the buildings have been completed. In Coincidences, the commonalities may be obvious or obscure and using these findings the exhibition reveals how ideas circulate and thread their way through different projects.

Contributing photographers include Sharyn Cairns, Erieta Attali, Sam Noonan, Kristoffer Paulsen, Brett Boardman, Earl Carter, Peter Hyatt, Dianna Snape, Peter Bennetts, John Gollings, Shannon McGrath, Trevor Mein and Max Creasy.

Sharyn Cairns, Sam Noonan, Kristoffer Paulsen, Earl Carter, Peter Hyatt, Dianna Snape and Peter Bennetts photographed projects they had not seen before, while John Gollings revisited one project and photographed another that was new to him.

Shannon McGrath and Trevor Mein were asked to reexamine a Wardle project from their archive and then shoot its pair.

The exhibition is on at the Andrew Lee King Dun Gallery at the Melbourne School of Design until the 26 October 2016. The gallery is open on weekdays.
