Micro Parks

Micro Parks is a free public happening in inner Sydney over the weekend of 16–18 May 2014 – a fusion of music and art that will transform the pocket parks of Surry Hills into jaw-dropping outdoor galleries and performance spaces.

Presented by Performance Space, Micro Parks brings together new music’s Ensemble Offspring with artists Joan Ross, Justin Shoulder, Fondue Set, and Malcolm Whittaker, who have created a series of (family-friendly) works across the suburb, inviting people to wander from park to park taking in the installations, discovering performances as they appear.

At Cooper Street Reserve you’ll encounter Calliope’s Nest, a site-specific installation by Ensemble Offsping’s Damien Ricketson and Edward Horne of Nest Design. The ensemble will create a series of sculptural musical objects that outdoors become an Aeolian harp, given voice to by the wind and murmuring gently to the birds. Enjoy this up close, or at a distance. It promises to be a bizarre ritual performance that both exalts and interferes with nature.

At Arthur Park (Arthur Street), Justin Shoulder’s 1001 Baddies will transform this everyday adventure playground into a fantastical, interactive creature using an array of objects, costumes and props.

In Ward Park (corner Devonshire and Marlborough Streets) Malcolm Whittaker’s My Best Friend offers a performative ritual walk and story-sharing in memory of dearly beloved departed pet pooches, inspired by the passing of the Whittaker family’s Winnie.
